The Death

Eight hours a night beside her bed
I sat and thought. Sometimes I read.
I had no heart at all to pray
As morphine soothed her life away,
But in rare intervals of pain
Her hand gripped mine, a child's again.

At last her breathing stopped. She died.
My giving done, I walked outside
And felt the world's vacuity
Merge with the emptiness in me.
