Fred Cogswell: The Many-Dimensioned Self

by Tony Tremblay

The Black and the Gold

sheer energy in a skin of formdances to an ever-being rhythmin golden rays of shimmering lightagainst black walls of space and time

something there is akin to lightthat drives apart all heavinessfrom gravid tug and viscous flowto curling wave and buoyant air

the breeze that rocks the spider's weband blows aloft the thistle-seedis planted in the flow of sapand in the pulse of driven blood

many rhythms dance the universe;in light all sex and seasons wavewhose flux contains the teeming lifeof time slow-measured by earth's spin

a dance analogous to mind, that light of self whose nimble thoughtthrough a maze of shifting words must mockthe planet which it warms and feeds

to grasp life's total paradigmthrow wide your window to the nightand watch, to star-tunes echoed here,gold-shoes beat on a floor of ebony
