The Death
Eight hours a night beside her bedI sat and thought. Sometimes I read.I had no heart at all to prayAs morphine soothed her life away,But in rare intervals of painHer hand gripped mine, a child's again.
At last her breathing stopped. She died.My giving done, I walked outsideAnd felt the world's vacuityMerge with the emptiness in me.
