Fred Cogswell: The Many-Dimensioned Self

by Tony Tremblay

Dialectic

I bear a god within the brainthat beasts know nothing ofIt makes me give against the grainin the very name of love

By it the infant and the old,the halt, diseased, insaneare kept from violence, hunger, coldthat in the beast-world reign

But I at best am centaur still,god-vision trapped in flesh,my selfish heart defeats my will,my mindless loins unleash

Now in the haunts of passion slainits flesh become a clodthe beast is sleeping, and in its brainrevives the fallen god
